Having captivated us with her ‘S’ EP and that track that sampled Fleetwood Mac, SZA is back with not one but two tracks. ‘Julia’ and ‘Teen Spirit’ are both taken from her upcoming ‘Z’ EP.
First track ‘Julia’ is a 80’s tinged slow jam which glimmers with a sparkling synth backdrop and a pop friendly beat, but all the while clinging onto SZA’s melancholic emotionally charged lyrical delivery, before subsiding just at the end into a jazzy sub-beat refrain. Second track ‘Teen Spirit’ takes us back to the alternative sound we heard on SZA’s last EP. Packed to the rafters with lugubrious vocals, all set to a dubby beat.
SZA releases her ‘Z’ EP in the Autumn, on her new label Top Dawg Entertainment.
