Basecamp – Greater Than //
Electronic music isn’t always an easy beast to tame. If you aren’t careful you can quite easily have a track that sounds too synth-heavy, or is overpowered by its melody. That’s why it’s always incredible to stumble across an artist that has a complete grasp of the technical aspect of electronic music production.
A technical grasp that Nashville’s Basecamp successfully showcase in their new EP ‘Greater Than’. A deep and confident journey through a hypnotising layered electronic soundscape which twists and turns through a myriad of genres and influences. All of which are held up by warm RnB tinged vocals.
A vocal that’s a reassuring beacon guiding you across a strange and unfamiliar soundscape, and prevents the listener being drowned in the many layers of production that make up Basecamp’s sound. It’s also a vocal that could quite easily hold it’s own without the need for the expansive electro composition.
Basecamp have also managed to make ‘Greater Than’ feel like a fluid journey from beginning to end, rather than an EP that’s made up of individual capsules of ideas and sounds. This is a fully realised exploration. Although as the trio explain, each track was born out of experimentation, and they were never sure where it was heading.
“‘Greater Than,’ like our first EP, was birthed out of experimentation. Every song we did started with almost no direction or concept, so it was always interesting to see where they landed.”
Which makes it all the more remarkable that they’ve managed to create a flowing sound, that draws you deeper into their aesthetic. That said by the time you reach track six a feeling of familiarity and repetition does start to subtly set in. Which makes me wonder how they’d make a full-length release work.
A confident, warming and interesting release from the Nashville trio, that you don’t want to miss.
‘Greater Than’ is out now via OWSLA.
